Questions about Timing Chain

Hi,
Some cars uses a Timing chain which is made of metal and looks like bicycle chain instead of the standard rubber belts.

1)Are those "timign chains" supposed to last a lifetime without replacement or maintanence?

2)How will i know if the chain needs replacing ? Its kinda hard to tell since its made of metal.

Hello Bro,
1. Timing chains do not last for life. However, good quality chains are very,very lasting. Personally, I had used chains that lasted more than 150,000km.
2.It will be make sufficient noise to warn you that it needs to be replaced.

one,its much more lasting that ur ordinary timing belt.
2nd, nope.not a life time but certainly a much longer time to replace it.
and yes.produces a fair amount of noise.

mine doesn't have timing chain or belt. it uses timing gear as my car is powered by pushrod engine.

Timing chain lasts longer then belt...

Well, timing chains last longer than conventional belts but it doent last forever as most mechanics says so to their customer. It'll make a noticeable sizzling sound while ur engine is started up & running, which shows the signs of replacement.

Nowadays, most of the new car models runs on timing chains instead of timing belts edi. :shades_smile: Pricing for timing chains is kinda affordable to get it replace & compare with belts, the price difference is just by a mere RM50-80 only. :shades_smile:

my Alfa Romeo 8V is running on timing chain. less headache and the mileage is already 230,000km. plus the new Ferrari F430 is running its V8 on timing chain as well.
