Volvo S40 Help!!!!

I'm thinking of getting a 2nd hand S40.. about 96-99 model.. so i was thinking is it a nice car?? nice drive?? how bout the fuel consumption?? repair and servicing cost very high?? Many say maintaining it is more exp than maintaining a BMW E34 or 46... is that true??
